A teenager murdered by the Greek police!

We stand in solidarity with the struggling people!

On December 6th two police officers murdered Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a 15 year old teenager, by shooting him right in his heart. At first, both government and police claimed that the police officers were attacked, which turned out to be a lie. The Media despite their effort to distort the facts and reproduce the government and police propaganda didn’t manage to succeed. A multitude of witnesses confirm that, right before the incident, the policemen provoked the group of young boys and a verbal conflict followed but at no instance were the policemen attacked or physically threatened.

It's not the first time the police has murdered in cold blood and it will not be the last. This bloody brutality must stop. This event was occurred at a time when the reactionary plans of the government force the majority of the people to live in the worst conditions possible, with out rights, condemning them to live a life of unemployment and poverty. This event is only an extreme manifestation of the violence which this system creates at every instance. Everyday the vast majority of the people gets a low paid unsecured job, financial insecurity and a collapse of the social web. Happiness is a consumer good which can only be bought in ever increasing doses. Societies are impersonal so it is easier to socialize negative externalities in the quest for individual profit. This social setup cannot but resemble a pressurized container. When the 15year old was shot this container busted. Every one of us was hit by that bullet. That is why immediately after the incident, thousands of people all over Greece went out in the streets to protest. The Greek police confronted the protesters with extreme violence...

From the night of Saturday the 6th since now, there are nation wide rallies, demonstrations, actions of all kinds by a diversified and numerous part of the Greek people. At many documented events the police made repeated unnecessary use of their firearms (even at the funeral), while many of them are extremely provocative towards the demonstrators threatening to kill them. Murder seems to be included in the police intentions and orders, as the video footage of the extreme police brutality shows (even against school kids and students). Huge amounts of tear gases and chemicals flooded all major Greek cities. Indiscriminate arrests among demonstrators were made , while members of fascist-groups disguised as concerned citizens and aided by the police participated in attacks with knives against protesters.

The extent of the riots and their pervasiveness is astonishing. Labor unions and social movements stand together against the government. The media are broadcasting misleading information in order to spear terror among the population and portray the justified anger of large part of the Greek society as pariahs who have no reason for discontent. It is the same tactic which was used during the French riots of 2005 by Sarkozy. What will be attempted next, is to allow for more repression, undemocratic anti terrorist legislation, and surveillance. The cause of the riots isn't lack of police men and incomplete laws. The root of the problem is too many unjust laws, too much injustice tucked in every corner of our lives.

This tragic event can not be viewed as either isolated or individually attributable. Other incidents include the murder of the suspected terrorist Brazilian plumber in the London subway and the death of the French youth that triggered the massive French riots, but the list is longer and more multifaceted. A social system based on the principle of individual profit cannot but create violence, everywhere present whether visible or hidden. In a world where Democracy means that the few rule in favor of an aristocracy of capital, where justice means that different set of rules and values apply for immigrants or people in the ever-“developing” world and different for first class citizens. Numbers count, People not. Individual profit counts, people not. Profits are privatized, while Losses are socialized. Let's stand up against the root causes and the policies which create world wide violence and injustice!

We call every citizen all over the world, to support and unite with the people and the youth of Greece in their ongoing massive demonstrations, in their fight for better conditions...
